Shoe Guru

by Emili Vesilind

George Mang was born to make shoes. His debut shoe collection, inspired by fashionable moments in history, is the culmination of a lifetime working in footwear. by the age of 15, the Arizona native was selling shoes retail, and by 23, he was a footwear buyer for the U.S. shoe Corp. In the early 1990's, Mang worked as the buyer and line-builder for Elite Fashions International, a job that took him on regular pilgrimages to luxury shoe factories in Italy. The varied training grounds led Mang, who is now based in L.A., to his most ambitious endeavor yet: a new collection of sexy-yet-chic shoes of his own design, created for the elegant woman who delights in standing out in the crowd. the line manufactured in Italian factories that Mang handpicked, using a sophisticated color palette, from blacks and teals to yellows and pinks, and ooh-la-la materials such as suede and python. Available at Jill Kohl in Santa Monica, 1210-A Montana Avenue, Santa Monica, 310.393.8889.

George, He's Got It

Armed with Italian-factory smarts and old-fashioned tenacity, George Mang is set to become a household name, in abodes whose occupants dig shoes, of course. With more than thirty years of footwear experience (from his first stint as a shoe salesman at the age of 15 to later work at Nordstrom), Mang has a great propensity for color, style and design. Priced from $460, his shoes pay homage to the true Italian artisans who craft them from last to heel.

His designs are made in two prestigious Venetian factories that have also created the beauties for footwear icon Christian Dior Couture and roger Vivier. With such a celebrated reputation to protect and high demand for work, the factories reserve production for only the best names in shoe design and fully support Mang's creativity.

Heads up, Blahnik, Choo and Louboutin; there's a new luxury shoe designer, and he's not lacking in attitude. "A daughter doesn't want to wear what her mother is wearing," says George Mang of his collection of intricately designed footwear, which debuts this fall. "I think I have something different to say than what's out there." A high school dropout who "wanted to grow up to be Keith Richards," Mang started his career at 16 as a department store shoe salesman in Phoenix. "I thought it would be a great way to meet girls," says the Scottsdale native, who later worked as a buyer and self-taught shoe designer. Last year he met two female entrepreneurs who became his backers, and George Mang Design was off and running. Starting next month, his shoes will be sold at select Nordstrom stores and at Jill Kohl. Made of satins, suede and kidskin leather, many of the styles recall the glamour of the '20s and '40s, but with a rock 'n' roll twist. Fall's offerings, which run from $450 to $750, include red suede pumps with a silver piped bow, ankle boots with a metal heel and plenty of sexy stilettos with Mang's signature silver lining and soles. Crafted in Italy by the same factories that Dior, Gucci and Sergio Rossi use, the creations get the hands-on touch from Mang, who crafts the buckles and detailing. Mang, who lives in Carlsbad, plans to add handbags to the mix and hopes to open his own shop in L.A.: "I need access to Hollywood and Hollywood needs access to me."

The George Mang collection will be offered at Jill Kohl, 1210-A Montana Ave., Santa Monica; (310) 393-8889.

The Mod Squad
Designer Digest - four up-and-coming designers who are ready to rock the shoe industry

Experience: Mang, 50, got his first taste for shoes as a salesman when he was 15. By the time he was 23, he was a buyer for US Shoes. but he received the bulk of his shoe education while working at Phoenix-based Elite Fashions International as a buyer and line builder. He later spearheaded the Arthur Beren store in Palo Alto, Calif., overseeing its opening.

Motivation: "My own line is something I thought about for a long time and it was a dream of mine for many years. I felt I had reached a point where I had something to say from a design standpoint. My friend gave me that extra push, telling me I have more factory smarts and industry smarts than a lot of the usual suspects that are highly successful now"

Design Philosophy: "I go through phases when I design, but I usually take moments in time that were really wonderful moments and use them for inspiration - I'm very much inspired by the British Invasion of the sixties, and glam rock. I draw my inspiration from people and right now it's the up and coming 'It' girls like Gwen Stefani, Angelina Joli and Keith Richard's daughters, Theodora and Alexandra."

ONES TO WATCH: George Mang
Annual look at the up-and-coming retailers, brands, executives and designers destined to make a splash in 2004.

Watch: George Mang

Because: He thinks he can nab the Choo and Blahnik customer.

George Mang is ready to take on the big boys of high-end footwear when his eponymous line launches for Fall '04.

As the core customer for Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik matures, Mang is hoping to fill a gap in the market with edgier, hipper, more feminine couture shoes. Priced at $450-$750, the line is being targeted at young Hollywood fashionistas and trendsetters. It's already caught the eye of a few high end boutiques such as Los Angeles' Jill Kohl Shoes, and Mang is in negotiations for several large department-store accounts as well.

In addition to the George Mang label, he is also launching Mang by George Mang, a more experimental and fashion-forward line.

Girls Gone Styled
Red-carpet Redux: this week's stunners

>NEW YORK: Monday, July 12, 2004

It's been a busy week of movie premieres and red-carpet galas. Whether it's Hollywood or New York, actresses know that a little bit of effort in the fashion department can translate into big bucks in ad campaigns and future acting parts. We didn't think anyone could look more stunning than Ashley Judd in Chanel couture at the "De-Lovely" premiere. We thought wrong. Here's a look at the some of the best red-carpet looks-and one visually stunning ad campaign shoot-from recent premieres.

A week later, Christina Applegate wore this Narciso Rodriguez fall 2004 runway collection mint silk crepe and satin bustier dress to the New York premiere of "Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy." Paired with loose, side-parted hair, Mang by George Mang "Snicker" stilettos, and subtle studs, the actress let her shimmering gown make all the fashion statement she needed for the night.
